Going for gold, in business and sport

Tonight, Great Britain goes for gold in hockey. I’ll be watching, cheering and hoping for gold!

My sporting history is not Olympian. But in Hong Kong last week, I felt the challenges and joys of sport. Kowloon Cricket Club (KCC) organised a veterans’ hockey tournament. Ten teams of wise, experienced players revisited our youths, but played with our heads as much as our hearts.

I like teams in business and in sport. At Apsley, my tailors aim for stylish success for every customer. Playing with Shaheen United at KCC , I saw teamwork, support and commitment from every player. We all worked so hard for success for ourselves, for the team and to show everyone how much we cared. Soon, that outward passion became clear to all. That is the basis of success.

We won the cup, we won the respect of the other teams and though we won, we shared that joy with every other player. Success is something to be shared and relished and to take with you into business and life.

Below is a picture of the trophy we won that day at the 2016 KCC veterans’ tournament, in honour of Con Conway. It symbolises the power of sport and the power of teams, and it reminds us all to celebrate the teams of people we work with. In my case, teams have making Apsley Tailors what it is since 1889. As in hockey, in tailoring we work hard for success for ourselves, for the team and to show every customer how much we care about them dressing for success.

So tonight, when we celebrate the GB women’s hockey team bringing home the gold (of that I am positive), let’s also celebrate the teams we work with all day, every day, and make sure to tell them they are gold medal winners, too.

Best wishes,
